After School Robotics Club

The Kettle Falls Robotics Club runs after school one day a week. Kids of all experience levels are welcome, we’re happy to work with novice fifth graders or eighth graders who have been doing robotics for years.

In the club, the kids will break into small groups and be given a challenge (build a race car or a tractor, etc.) then given a few sessions to work on it. During the build time, the kids will have to construct the robot, wire it up and program it.

When they finish their build, we’ll have an in-house competition and give out treats to the winners.

(Actually, everyone gets treats, the winners just get first pick).

Some of the challenges will explore mechanical design while others stress programing. Regardless of the challenge, each group will have to creatively solve a problem while working with their peers.

Our primary robot system is the Lego EV3, but we also have two Lego SPIKE robots, so if your kid

loves Lego, this is the place. Also, we’ve got 6-8 VEX robots to experiment with.

We also occasionally get invited to robot competitions. When those come up, the kids will have the

option to participate if they are interested.

The lead Mentor for the club is Glenn Hume who has been working with middle school robotics for 8 years. We often have high school students who volunteer their time to help

the next generation.

F.A.Q.

  • When does the club meet?

    • Typically, once a week after school from 2:45-4:00. Each year is a little different, so if you’re interested, please contact us in January.

  • What about schedule conflicts, sports, etc…

    • The club is a drop-in program. If you miss a few weeks or even a month, you can come back at any time.

  • Is there a cost to being in the club?

    • No cost, come on by and check it out!

  • Do you take donations?

    • Yes! We are a 501c3. If you are interested in donating, Thank You! Please contact us.

  • Can parents or siblings come to check it out?

    • Of course! Anyone is welcome at any time. We’re often busy helping the kids, so if you have a question, you may need to be patient.

  • What kind of engineering challenges do you have?

    • In the past we’ve built: Dragsters, Tractors, Race Cars, Maze Runners, Sumo Bots, Ball Throwers and Line Followers. We’re always looking for new activities that are fun and meet the kids where they are.

  • Is there a limit on how many kids can participate?

    • Yes and no, in principle we’d love to have anyone who is interested and in reality, that’s how it works most of the time. Occasionally though, we have a huge turn out, and it’s more than the coaches can handle while still helping the kids the way we want.
